The largest remaining bottomland hardwood forest in the country. Barred owls, anhingas, armadillos, feral hogs.
Saluda Riverwalk
Three miles of moving water
Ospreys working the rapids, cormorants surfacing somewhere you were not looking, geese holding the bank.

A DNR preserve near Cayce. Where the heron finally held still, and where our first anhinga spread its wings.

The river chose what we would remember.
The current never stopped moving and neither did the wildlife. An osprey worked the water from above while cormorants dropped under and came up somewhere we were never looking.
Why we started
The outing matters as much as the image.
Most wildlife photography shows you the one frame that worked. We keep the rest of the day too — the hour spent losing a heron before finding him again.
Avery shoots. Heath films. Neither of us is in a hurry, which turns out to be the only real technique we have.
